Overview

Gandhi Seva Sadan Charitable Trust (GSSCT) was established in Kerala, India in 2005 by freedom fighter Shri Sadanam Kumaran and Smt. Sarojini Amma with the aim of providing quality education, improving livelihoods and offering crisis relief and support for rural communities, particularly the underprivileged and marginalised groups.

GSSCT is a registered charity (R. No. 27/2005/4) based in Palakkad district, a region that has a primarily agrarian economy and is often referred to as the ‘granary of Kerala’. Having identified the lack of access of quality education as a major factor hindering the economic uplift of people in and around the region, the founders of GSSCT vowed to establish centres of educational excellence catering primarily to children from the rural communities.

In keeping with the vision of its founders, GSSCT today runs four institutions that offer affordable, quality education ranging from early childhood to post-graduate levels. More than 50,000 students have received education at GSSCT institutions since the trust’s founding.

In addition, the trust is engaged in numerous other community welfare activities including health and hygiene initiatives, irrigation and water resources management projects, and development of rural roads.

Legacy

The late Shri. Sadanam Kumaran was a freedom fighter who was jailed by the British for taking part in the Quit India Movement in 1942. He escaped from jail and was caught by the British authorities while he was underground and put on fetters as a punishment under rigorous imprisonment.

Shri Sadanam Kumaran later returned to his village, heeding a call from Mahatma Gandhi to the youth of India to go back to their villages and start reconstructing the country from grassroots to be ready to take over from the British when they left.

His very first act after his return was to establish a Gandhian Basic School for Harijan, a community with little to no education access at the time. Although the school was closed due to political interventions, Shri Sadanam Kumaran went on to found three other institutions – Gandhi Seva Sadan, Gandhi Seva Sadan Kathakali and Classic Art Academy, and Seva Sadan Central School. All three institutions are registered under the Societies Act of 1860 as separate societies.

Shri Sadanam Kumaran passed away in 2005, the year in which GSSCT was floated as a public trust. Following his death, the mantle was passed on to his eldest son Shri. K. Ravikumar. He was co-opted as the Managing Trustee of GSSCT with the responsibility of starting institutions of higher learning.

Leadership

Prof. Ravikumar K. leads the GSSCT as its Managing Trustee carrying forward the legacy and commitment of the founding trustees towards social uplift through quality education.

After graduating with honours in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry from GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), Prof. Ravikumar went on to complete his Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM, Batch 1974-76) from IIM Ahmedabad. He served in the banking, non-governmental and agro-tech sectors for decades before choosing a career path in education.

He returned to his native village in Palakkad in the hope of bringing his wealth of experience in the industry and in education to serve the community.

SKC was similarly started to provide tutorial support to students appearing privately for university examinations, but grew in a short time to become a well-reputed, university-affiliated, multi-disciplinary undergraduate college. Education with values and quality is at the core of Prof. Ravikumar’s working philosophy. He constantly encourages young people to look outward and forward, while drawing strength from their cultures, traditions and value systems. A passion for Indian art forms is something Prof. Ravikumar inherited. He received early training in mridangam and continues to practice and perform as an artist. SAPA emerged from his desire to popularise and have more people appreciate the beauty of Indian performing arts. Under his directives, the academy has opened its doors to anyone who is interested in learning dance and music, irrespective of their age. It provides training free of cost to all students enrolled at GSSCT institutions.

Prof. Ravikumar has pursued multifarious interest since young. Besides the arts, he has a keen interest in sports, having led his university teams in athletics and swimming, and as an organiser and debater. The interest in agriculture, nurtured early at GPUAT, has continued through later years. He has twice been awarded as the best dairy farmer in the district and named as the best farmer for his innovative approach that led to the rejuvenation of nearly 20 acres of barren land for cultivation.

It is with this diversity of interests and breadth of experiences that he leads GSSCT’s efforts to provide holistic education in keeping with the trust’s vision to produces, innovative, productive and well-rounded citizens who give more to the society than what they have taken from it.
